It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of George Louis Martell of Glace Bay. Lou passed away peacefully Sunday, June 20, 2010, at the Glace Bay Hospital with his loving family by his side.
Born in Dominion, he was the son of the late Ralph and Clara 'Toddy' (Boutilier) Martell, and was a member of Warden United Church in Glace Bay.
Lou worked for CP Rail in Ontario as a road-maker for 19 years, returning to Cape Breton in 1965 and began his employment with Devco, where he remained until his retirement in1989. Lou enjoyed his time at his cottage in Catalone, especially when he was mackerel fishing from his boat. He was a true outdoorsman, with numerous hunting and fishing spots in the Gabarus and Grand Mira areas. He had a love for music, enjoying many kitchen parties where he would play his banjo and mouth organ. He also enjoyed playing darts, and was a member of a league in Dominion. Louie will mainly be remembered as a family man, being a wonderful husband, and a loving and caring father.
He will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 39 years, Jo-Ann (Huntington) Martell; daughters, Dale (Bob) Jesky, Alberta, Karen (Wayne) MacNeil, Truro, Sandra (Doug) Rowe, Ontario, Bonnie (Michael) Tracey, Glace Bay, Wanda (Almeida) Valens, Ontario, Dayna Martell, Glace Bay; sons, Dwayne (Lee) Ontario, Louis (Rene), Ronald (Lynn), both of Alberta; brothers, Arthur, Victoria Bridge, Robert, Dominion; 15 grandchildren including granddaughter Lara who he helped raise like his own daughter; five great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Lou was predeceased by brothers, Jack, Angus, sisters, in infancy and sister-in-law Cleophus 'Cle' Martell.
Visitation for Louis will be held Wednesday, June 23 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Warden United Church, Glace Bay, with Rev. Clayton Austin officiating. A luncheon will follow in the church hall, all are welcome.
Cremation will be taking place, with interment at a later date in St. Paul's Anglican Cemetery, Blackbrook.
Donations in Lou's memory may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or a charity of choice.
