It is with broken hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved father, brother, uncle and grandfather, Bernard Francis McPhee. Bernie passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital after a brief illness.
Born in New Waterford, Bernie was the son of the late Daniel and Josephine (Ranson) McPhee.
Bernie served as a cook in the Canadian armed Forces during the Korean War before going into the mines at # 12 colliery. He also worked at the dock in Sydney and as a carpenter for many years.
Bernie was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 15 in New Waterford, he also was a member of the New Waterford Pensioners Club. Bernie loved to share his cooking talents and his skill at cribbage with family and friends.
He is survived by his daughters, Elizabeth (Harry) Ferguson, Sheila (Stephen) George, Martha (Wilson) Burchell, Mary ‘Mamie’ LaTulippe; son, Scott (Cathy); stepsons, Eddie and Claude LaTulippe. Bernie also is survived by his sisters, June Attwood, Mary (Henry) Burns; sisters-in-law, Florie, and Gina; brother-in-law, Jimmy Burns. Bernie will be sadly missed by his 16 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren who were the love of his life; as well as many nieces and nephews. Bernie also leaves a large extended family and many friends who will miss his smile. His longtime best friend, Bob Donahue, will also miss Bernie.
Besides his parents, Bernie was predeceased by his loving longtime companion, Caroline LaTulippe, sisters, Margaret, Veronica, Theresa, Thelma and Dolena, brothers, Donald ‘Buddy’, Wilfred and James ‘Jimmy’, brothers-in-law, Wilfred Attwood, Arthur MacMullin, Vince Whiting, Robert Petrie, Judson Boutilier; and sister-in-law, Claira McPhee.
There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place under the direction of McLellan Brother’s Funeral Home Ltd., 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, 862-7500. A memorial mass will be held Wednesday, May 20 at 10 a.m. in the parish of Saint Leonard, Our lady Of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church, New Waterford, with Fr. Doug Mac Donald officiating with interment in Mount Carmel Cemetery. A reception will be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall 3226 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, immediately following. All are welcomed to attend.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Bernie’s memory to the Canadian Cancer Society, Cape Breton Palliative Care Society or Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.
