NEW GLASGOW - William Robert "Bill" Stroud, 94, of New Glasgow, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, June 22, 2010 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow.
Born in New Glasgow, he was a son of the late Theadore and Lela Dale (Brown) Stroud. William was an adherent of Christ Anglican Church, Stellarton and had attended the church since childhood. During the Second World War he served in the Canadian Armed Forces, having received his basic training in Charlottetown, P.E.I. Bill attended schools in Deep Brook, New Glasgow and Stellarton and in later years, he attended night school in Stellarton where he received Mine Examiners papers. He was a Mine Examiner for 25 years and worked in the mines for a total of 37 years. During the Springhill mine explosion, he served with several other miners from the MacBean Mine on the rescue team. After retiring from mining, he was employed as an orderly at Glen Haven Manor, New Glasgow for six years. Bill was a 50-year member of Fuller Lodge No. 5, Stellarton and a 40-year member of KOP Liberty Lodge No. 22, New Glasgow, a member of Scotia Lodge No. 11, I.O.O.F., Westville and Golden Link Rebekah Lodge No. 4, New Glasgow. He was honoured as "Knight of the Year for the Maritime Domain" at a Grand Lodge Sessions held in St. Stephen, N.B., several years ago.
Surviving are his wife of 72 years, Muriel (Boomer); daughter, Vona (Art) Fleming, Trenton; son, Judge Robert "Bob" (Helen) Stroud, Stellarton; sister, Hazel MacDonald, Thorburn; grandchildren, Tom (Susan), Fall River; Mark (Angela), Stellarton; Brian (Wendy), Hammonds Plains; Darren (Olivia), Stellarton; Gregory (Diane), Montreal, Que.; Shawn (Tina), Saint John's, Nfld; great-grandchildren; Robert, Anne Muriel, Abbey, Chloe, Brett, Morgan, Mason, Charlotte, Kate, Samuel, Brigette, Gabriel and Aidan; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by sisters, Ora Fraser and Jean Buell; brothers, Theadore and Ernest.
The family will receive visitors 2-4 & 7-9 pm Thursday in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday in Christ Anglican Church, Stellarton with Rev. Aidan Kingsbury officiating. Interment will be in Heatherdale Memorial Gardens.
