It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend, John Enis MacLeod, 80, of River Ryan on June 22, 2010, at home.
Born in Inverness, he was a son of the late Duncan and Mary Margaret (MacPhee) MacLeod.
John was a member of the former St. Michael's Church and currently the Parish Church of St. Leonard.
He started his employment with the Blue Store delivering groceries to locals on horse and wagon. From there he entered the mines working in No. 18, 12 and Lingan collieries for over 37 years until his retirement.
John enjoyed wood working, fly-fishing and singing. He was a member of the Men of the Deeps for 35 years and was well known for his step-dancing talents.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Florence (MacPherson); five sons, John (Avian), Glace Bay, Lawrence (Arlene), River Ryan, Stanley 'Nipper' (Judy), Scotchtown, Bernie (Sandra), Neil (Laurie), both of River Ryan; two daughters, Debbie McFadden (John), Toronto, Kim MacCormick (Ray), River Ryan; 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brothers, Alex (Bernice), Pictou, Paul, Toronto; sisters, Margie Micholsky, Sutton, Marie Butler (Vince), Ajax.
John was predeceased by brothers, John Archie, Neil, Hughie Dan, Angus, Francis 'Fabby', Ernie, sisters, Mary Belle, Sarah, daughter-in-law, Thelma, granddaughter, Amanda.
Visitation will be held Friday, June 25 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration for John will take place Saturday, June 26 at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, New Waterford, with Fr. Paul MacNeil officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael's cemetery, River Ryan, with a luncheon to follow at St. Leonard's parish hall, Convent Street, New Waterford.
Donations in his memory may be made to Hospice/Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton or the VON.
