MacLEAN, Alfred H., R.N. (Ret'd.) - 74, of Pictou, and formerly of Pictou Island passed away June 22, 2010 in the Maritime Oddfellows Home, Pictou. Born on Pictou Island, January 15, 1936, he was the only son of the late Howard & Bertha (Rankin) MacLean. He received his early education on Pictou Island, leaving school in grade six to care for his invalid mother. After her death in 1953 he returned to school and obtained grade eleven, studying and writing provincial exams. While caring for his mother he took a Practical Nursing Course from St. Louis, Missouri, and in 1954 wrote Certified Nursing Assistant exams after spending six months at the Victoria General Hospital, Halifax. He worked as a C.N.A. (L.P.N. now) in Halifax, Dartmouth, Truro, and Pictou and also in Chatham, New Brunswick and Lowell, Mass. He then went to St. Martha's Hospital to train and obtained an R.N. diploma. While employed at St. Martha's he attended St. F. X. University, graduating in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. He was night supervisor at St. Martha's until 1979. He went on to teach at the Aberdeen School of Nursing until 1984 when he became nursing supervisor, which he held until 1995 when he retired due to ill health. During his nursing career he was president of the Pictou County Branch of the R.N.A.N's for two terms and chairman of Nursing Practice for the Province of Nova Scotia for one term. Alfred was a member of Sutherland Presbyterian Church, Pictou Island, where he was organist for over fifty years. In later years he attended St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Pictou, where he was supply organist and served three years on the Board of Managers, one as chairman. He is survived by his sister, Doris (Keith) MacDonald; nephew, Kevin MacDonald, Pictou Island; nieces, Myrna (Andrew) LeBlanc, Durham and Ruby (Stephen) Ross, Greenhill; very special great nieces, Anna LeBlanc, Kristen and Claire Ross. Also surviving are step sisters, Mary Ann Cameron, and Maxine (Jim) Cox; step brothers, Charlie (Eva), Robert (Beverly) and David (Carolyn) Dwyer. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his step mother, Esther (Dwyer) MacLean; step brother, Larry Dwyer; step sister, Leona Heighton; and a special cousin who was like a sister to him, Shirley Rankin. His remains will rest in the McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou with visiting hours 6-9 PM Friday. Funeral service will be held 3:00 PM Saturday from St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Pictou. Burial will be in Seaview Cemetery. No Flowers by request. Donations in his memory may be made to Covenant House, 20 Gerrard St. E, P.O. Box 20026 STN BRM B, Toronto, ON, M7Y 3T6.
