Lola Electra (nee Jessinghouse) Cameron after ninety years died peacefully after a brief illness in Baddeck, N.S., June 28, 2010.
Lola was born into a large family in Dartmouth in 1919. With her father as a passenger, she began driving at age 12 and proudly continued to be in the drivers seat until she was 89.
She started work at Eaton's where she met the love of her life, Howard Cameron. While he served overseas during the Second World War, Lola contributed to the war effort at home by working at Eastern Air Command, notably during the sinking of the Bismarck. After Howard returned from active service, they married and moved to the west coast, eventually returning to Nova Scotia by driving a Model T across the continent. Partners in all things, Lola and Howard ran a successful company, Dunn Construction, for over four decades.
Lola was an enthusiastic contributor to her community as a volunteer to numerous organizations. She loved lobster dinners, high-heeled shoes, curling, playing bridge, entertaining family and friends with her stories over a "cuppa" tea - and smoking, a habit she savoured for over eighty years.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Howard; her daughter, Carol and three siblings.
She is survived by sister, Isabelle and brother, Reginald; her son, Howard (Clare); grandchildren, Kurt, Greer, Jocelyn, Brock, Kim, Shelley, Jeffery and great-grandchildren, Cameron, Charles, Abraham, Isabella, Megan, Brenna, Nathan and Connor.
Cremation has taken place and friends are asked to celebrate a life well lived by visiting MacAskill's Funeral Home Thursday, July 1, 2010 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Greenwood United Church Friday, July 2, 2010 at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Baddeck Lions Club or Victoria County Memorial Hospital.
