BAXTER, Richard Gibb - 82, of Hammonds Plains, formerly of Sydney, passed away peacefully in the VG Site, QEII, Halifax, on Monday May 18, 2009. The son of Richard and Isabella Baxter, he was born in Motherwell, Scotland on September 1, 1926, and immigrated to Canada as an infant. He was raised in Sydney Mines, where he became a Worshipful Master of the Grand Masonic Lodge. He worked as a stationary engineer in Sydney, with the Sydney School Board and the Sydney City Hospital until his retirement in 1994. He was an active elder in Bethel Presbyterian Church in Sydney, and served as an interim moderator of the Cape Breton Presbytery. In 1996 he moved to Bedford, to be close to his children. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Anne (Forrest) Baxter; his children, D. Lynn (Terry) MacPherson and R. Daren (Jocelyne) Baxter; his grandchildren, Aaron MacPherson, Kyle MacPherson, Isabella Baxter and Callum Baxter, and his sisters-in-law, Katherine Taylor, Lake Wales, Fla., and Ethel Forrest, Sydney Mines. He was predeceased by his sisters, Etta and Nina and his brothers, Alex, Bill and James. A memorial service will be held in Grace Chapel Church, 255 Ross St., Halifax, 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 21, and a committal will be held in Brookside Cemetery in Sydney Mines on Saturday, May 23 at 11:00 am with Reverend Richard Robertson presiding.
