It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Robert Murphy. Robert passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 7, 2010, at the Glace Bay Hospital with his loving family by his side.
Born in Port Morien, he was the son of the late William and Catherine (Morrison) Murphy.
While only in his teens he served over seas in the Second World War for four years, celebrating his 17th birthday in England. Upon is return from overseas, he briefly worked in No. 24 Colliery. He re-entered the Armed Forces and served an additional 22 years.
In his later years, he worked as a commissionaire for AECL at the Glace Bay Heavy Water Plant, retiring after several years of service.
He had a passion for music his entire life. In his earlier years, he was a member of various bands. He was most proud of his time in the Donkin Band. Both Robert and Layla enjoyed playing darts together and were members of numerous leagues. Robert also enjoyed being a hobby gardener growing flowers and vegetables in his hothouse.
Robert will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 24 years, Layla (Roberts-Whiting); brothers, William (Kathleen) and Sonny, both of Port Morien; stepchildren, Sharon Whiting, Glace Bay, Kevin Whiting (Nancy), Glace Bay, Richard Whiting (Melanie), Ottawa, Jim Whiting (Darlean) Sydney; five granddaughters; seven great-grandchildren; and several brothers-in-law and sister-in-law. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Robert was predeceased by his fist wife, Louise (Favaro), his beloved son, Elliot, brothers, James (Beatrice), Courtney (Catherine), Bryon and Donald, sisters, Iris Currie (Charles), Jean Felmate (Austin), Alice and Lima.
In honouring Robert's wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date.
