It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Joseph ‘Joe’ Power at the Glace Bay Health Care Facility on May 20, 2009, while surrounded by his wife, family and friends.
Born in Sydney, N.S., Feb. 7, 1946, to the late Katherine and Edward Power.
Joe was a former correctional officer for the Province of Nova Scotia. He was a member of St. Anthony’s parish, Glace Bay.
He was a lifelong associate member of the Cedars Club, Sydney.
He was an avid fan of the Chicago Blackhawks of the NHL and was also a dedicated fan of the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. He was a tremendous volunteer for many, many organizations of which his passion was focused on raising money for childrens organizations.
He was blessed throughout his life to have had many special friends whom he dearly treasured.
Joe leaves behind his beloved wife of 41 years, the former Joanna Pyke. He will be dearly missed by brother, Pat (Brenda) Power, Sydney; brother-in-law, David (Monica) Pyke, Albert Bridge; sisters-in-law, Nancy Mitchell, Ajax, Ont., and Karen (Barrett) Pyke, Glace Bay; nieces, Sarah Mitchell, Kelly Pyke, Krystal (Pyke) Martell and family and Donna Power; nephews, Jeff and Jamie (Kim) Pyke; great nieces, Brianna, Caitlyn and Jamielynn Martell and Danielle Power. Also surviving is Joe’s extended family, Catherine Ferguson, Norm, Michael, Archie Ferguson and family and Mary Moore and family.
Joe was predeceased by his beloved daughter, Audrey Marie in August 2005.
Visitation will be held Friday, May 22 at Sydney Memorial Chapel from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass to celebrate Joe’s life will be held Saturday, May 23 at St. Anthony’s Church at 10 a.m. with Fr. Conrad Edwards officiating. Burial to follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Glace Bay.
Donations in Joe’s memory may be made to the Kidney Foundation of Cape Breton, the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Dialysis Unit or to a charity of choice.
