George Aloysius Butts, son of the late John and Mary Dora (Cadegan) of Bridgeport N.S. passed away peacefully following a courageous battle with cancer on Thursday, May, 21, 2009 at the Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro, N.S. at the age of 82.
Survived by his dear friend and loving companion Margaret ‘Peggy’ Shortliffe; brother, Charles (Rita); sisters-in-law, Germaine (Ed) of Bridgeport, N.S. and Violet ‘Kitty’ Petrie (Harry Bibb); brother-in-law, Bernard Petrie; his children, George (Cindy), Ottawa, Ont., Peggy Palmer, Lower Sackville, N.S., Kathy (Tim) Bryant, Mississauga, Ont., John (Ellen), Truro, N.S.; eight grandchildren, Ryan, Tara, Derrick, Sean, Heather, Adam, Jessica and Kylie; two great-grandchildren, Avery and Eliza. George also leaves to mourn an extended family of many nieces, nephews and cousins with whom he shared a special relationship.
Predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Mary Lila (Petrie); granddaughter, Aimée Butts; brothers, John, O.H. ‘Jerry’ (Margie) and Ed of Bridgeport, Richard (Veronica) of Guelph Ont.; sister, the Hon. Sr. Mary Alice ‘Peggy’ Butts, CND.
George was an honorary Life Member of the Knights of Columbus, an avid sports fan (supporting the Detroit Tigers to the end), a golfer and a curler and an active community business-person who dedicated approximately 20 years to Moxon’s and MacQuarries Pharmacies in Truro.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro. As requested, there will be no visitation. A funeral mass will be celebrated at Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, 669 Prince St., Truro at 2 p.m., on Friday, June 12, 2009 followed by a reception in Campbell Hall.
The family would like to express its sincere thanks to the many friends and relatives who called to express their support and assisted him to appointments or with household tasks. A special thank-you goes to the staff of Colchester Regional Hospital, 3 North, Dr. Henderson and the Palliative Care Team, the VON, and to Dr. M. Murray.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
