Sister Anne Catherine Gillis, CND (Sister St. John Hugh), Sydney/Truro. The Sisters of the Congregation of Notre Dame and the Gillis family announce the passing into eternal life of Sr. Anne C. Gillis on Saturday evening, May 23, 2009, at the CND Health Care Centre, Sydney.
Born April 24, 1933, in Sydney, she was a daughter of the late Jack and Geraldine (Bates) Gillis.
Professed in 1953, she taught in Sydney at St. Joseph’s, Constantine School, Holy Redeemer Boys School and Saint Anthony Daniel. Following a successful teaching career, she entered the Catechetical Pastoral Ministry field, serving many years at Saint Anthony Daniel, various parishes of Antigonish County, Holy Redeemer, Sydney and Saint Gertrude’s parish, Woodstock, N.B., and was also a member of the CND Provincial Leadership Team. Anne will be remembered for her great love of people.
Her last ministry was in Truro where she lived deeply the true spirit of the congregation “fille de paroisse”. She was a woman of great energy, enthusiasm and faith.
Sr. Anne is survived by her brothers, Joseph (Edna), Marlborough, Mass., Ronnie (Della), Antigonish; sisters, Aileen, CSM, St. Andrew’s, Jane, Scarborough, Maine, Sally, Sydney; sisters-in-law, Bernadette, Joan, Mina Gillis-Chamberlain; several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her brothers, Fr. Lawrence, Gerry, John Hugh, Cyril, Chris and Bernie.
Visitation for Sister Anne Gillis will be held Tuesday, May 26 from 3:30-6:30 p.m., with a memorial mass at 7 p.m., and visitation recommencing after the mass, until 9:30 p.m., all at Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, 669 Prince St., Truro. A celebration of her life will take place Wednesday, May 27 at 2 p.m. at the church, Fr. Dariusz Miskowicz officiating. Reception will follow in Campbell Hall. Interment will be held in Robie Street Cemetery.
