The death of Frank William Withers occurred on July 22, 2010 at Ridgewood Veteran's Wing. Born 1922 in Saint John to the late Fred and Suzannah Withers. Frank served in the Merchant Navy overseas in both the Atlantic and Mediterranean during WWII. Frank then worked as a journalist, teacher, and editor. He was a founding member of the NB Conservation Council and a member of the Council of Canadians, the SJ Naturalist Club, Veterans Against Nuclear Arms, and Merchant Navy Association. He also won the Milton Gregg Award for Conservation Work.
He is survived by his loving wife Mitzi (Baxter) of Bayswater; sons David Stevens (Ruth) of Bayswater, John Stevens of Saint John, James Stevens of Calgary, AB; daughters Sara Sherwood (Allan) of Bayswater and Helen Laite (Terry) of Quispamsis; sister Janice Morrison of Woodstock; grandchildren Tara, Patricia, Murray, Mitzi, Jack, Cody, Joshua, Jeremy, Christina, Ben, Jessica, Christopher; great-grandchildren Devon, Gregory, Eli, Eve, Kohean, Kamron, Lily and Jeraden; many nieces, nephews and friends. Besides his parents he was predeceased by brothers Murray, Edward, and Phillip Withers and Frances Izzard.
Arrangements are under the direction of Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Rd., Saint John (646-2424). Following cremation, visitation will be held on Saturday, July 24, 2010 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. with a memorial service to take place at the Fundy Funeral Home Chapel on Sunday, July 25, 2010 at 2:30 p.m. A reception will follow after which interment will take place at Black River United Church Cemetery.
