It is with heartfelt sadness we announce the passing of mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Mary Elizabeth ‘Betty’ MacDonald on May 23, 2009, at home on Mount Carmel Avenue, where she resided with her daughter Cathy (Gussie) McPherson and loving grandsons Jonathan and Alex.
She passed away surrounded by her loving family.
She was born in New Waterford, Oct. 2, 1920, to her loving parents, the late Angus and Elizabeth (Steele) Grant.
Betty was a very busy mother and an active member of the Parish of St. Leonard, Mt. Carmel Church. She was also a member of the CWL, Ageing Gracefully and Pensioners Club (New Waterford, Scotchtown and Gardiner). For many years she owned and operated MacDonalds Candy Store. She also hosted election headquarters in the 1960s and 70s. She was well known at camp carmel for her home cooking and sense of humour.
She cherished her many friends enjoying what she liked most; dancing, singing, reading, baking, praying, and a good game of cards.
Betty is survived by daughters, Betty (Marshall) Poirier, Sadie (Gordie) Warburton, Cathy (Gussie) McPherson, Theresa (Pat) Donovan, Sheila (Gary) Oliver, all of New Waterford, Sandy (Denis) Lyonnais, Quebec, and Maureen (Sandy) Wilson, Lantz, N.S. Betty is also survived by her sister, Mary (Cecil) Snow, Oromocto, N.B.; and a brother, Bernie (Phyllis) Grant, Windsor, N.S. She was a wonderful grandmother and friend to her grandchildren, Roselyn, Karen, Lisa, Tammy, Cathy, Cindy, Sally, Jonathan, Alex, Conor, Elizabeth, Mark, Kathleen, Craig, Alyson, Nancy and Richard. She was also blessed with 19 great-grandchildren. Betty loved all of her family very much, and will be greatly missed by all, but her unending faith and glowing spirit will lighten our hearts always.
Betty was predeceased by her husband, Alex (1972), three children in infancy, brothers, John, Alex and Tom Grant, and sisters, Lena, Lil and Kay.
Ma MacDonald had a great zest for life and a special way of touching the many hearts of those who knew her.
Visitation will be held Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration for Betty will take place Wednesday, May 27 at 10 a.m. in the Parish of St. Leonard, Mt. Carmel Church with Fr. Doug MacDonald officiating.
