We, the family, are sad to announce the passing of John James Charumski, 85, of Glace Bay, who passed away peacefully with his loving family at his side, Friday, May 22, 2009, at his residence.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Charles and Lucy (White) Charumski.
John was a member of Holy Cross Church, Glace Bay. In his early years John was recognized as an excellent baseball player hitting numerous homeruns at South Street Ball Park. John was an usher at the Savoy theatre before joining the Cape Breton Highlanders. He served his country overseas during the Second World War, where he was seriously injured in Italy on Feb. 4, 1944. John was very actively involved with the War Amps, and a former member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 03. But mostly, he will be remembered as a very caring and compassionate father who loved his family.
John is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Helen (Jessome) Charumski; his loving daughters, Patricia Charumski, at home, Mary (Frank) Parsons, Joan (Wes) Murphy, Paula (Stephen) Butler, all of Glace Bay; loving sons, Jim (Judith), Dartmouth, Joe ,Vancouver, and John Walter, Bedford; 10 grandchildren who he loved dearly, Francis (Juanita), Stephen (Tracy), Raymond (Mandi) Parsons, Johanthan (Alana), Ellen, Mathew Butler, Shawna and Jennifer Murphy, Nicole, Kyle Charumski; three great-grandchildren, Colin and Taylor Parsons and Cameron Butler. He is also survived by brothers, Tommy (Pauline), Clarence and Stephen, Ontario, sisters, Mary (Jim), Ontario, and Rose, Halifax; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by brothers, Fred, Roddy, Alex, Walter, Felix, Joe, Paul, and sister, Annie Campbell.
Visitation for John will be held today (Monday, May 25) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass officiated by Rev. Conrad Edwards is Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. in Holy Cross Church, Glace Bay. Interment will be in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney. A reception will take place in the parish hall.
