It is with deep sadness that we, the family, announce the sudden passing of Earl Joseph Gouchie on Saturday, May 23, 2009, at his Camp in Shulie, N.S., at the age of 74. Born in Amherst, he was a son of the late Albert and Edna (LeBlanc) Gouchie. As the longtime former publisher/owner of Cumberland Publishing Ltd. (Amherst Daily News, The Citizen, Atlantic Post Calls and The Sackville Tribune Post), Earl was a well-respected businessman and member of the community. He served his community on several committees, such as, CRHCC, past president of the Atlantic Canadian Newspaper Association. Earl enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time at his camp with friends and family. He will best be remembered for his great sense of humor and his sincere kindness. He will be lovingly remembered and missed by his wife of 49 years, the former, Pat (Willigar); his children, Jeff (Belinda) Gouchie, Janice (Greg) Landry and Jennifer Dempsey, all of Amherst; brothers, Gerald (Erla) of Amherst, Donald (Marg) of Sault St. Marie, Ont., Raymond (Lisette) of Sudbury, Ont.; sisters, Theresa Cormier, Marion (Jim) Wendler, Doreen (Jerry) Boullion of Sudbury, and Bernadette (Bunny) Henri all of Sudbury, Ont.; grandchildren, Amelia and Natasha Gouchie, Justin, Samantha and Tyler Landry and Colton, Brandon Dempsey; numerous, nieces, nephews, uncles and aunts. Cremation has taken place under the care of Campbell’s Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst (902-667-9906). There will be no visitation by the request of the family. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Thursday, May 28, 2009, at 2 p.m. from Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, Amherst, with Father Vernon Driscoll and Deacon Rick Hartnett officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations in Earl’s memory may be made to the IWK b.r.a.i.n.child (Brain Tumour Research Assistance and Information Network) or charity of choice.
