NEW GLASGOW - Allen James DeMont, 78, of New Glasgow, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 23, 2010 at home surrounded by family after a brief battle with cancer.
Born in Trenton, he was a son of the late Harry and Mary (Benoit) DeMont.
Allen was employed by Hawker Siddeley for 41 years. He was a skilled tradesman, having worked on numerous construction sites, including Mount Saint Bernard residences on the campus of Saint Francis Xavier University. He had fond memories of being a trolley coach driver in Halifax. Allen was a senior member of the RCAF Association Wing 110, Stellarton serving in many capacities including President. He was awarded Life Membership into the Royal Canadian Air Cadets, Trenton Squadron. He served as President of the Heather Figure Skating Club for several years. He was an active member of Trinity United Church and a member of Session. Allen enjoyed his daily visits to Tim Horton's and Sobeys where he had many friends. He was an avid snooker player, blood donor, an active member of the Liberal Association, and a friend always ready to give a helping hand.
Allen is survived by his loving wife Jean (Layton); four daughters: Phyllis (James) Durning, Halifax; Brenda (Richard) McPherson, Calgary, Alberta; Nancy (Mark) Kellock, New Glasgow; Mary Jane (Leonard) Pelerine, Merigomish; nine grandchildren: Alison, Christopher, Heather, Noah, Claire, Justin, Hannah, Nicholas and Hilary; sister, Violet (Treen) Forward.
He was predeceased by six brothers and eight sisters, locally Irene (Meikle) and Harry.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow, where the family will receive visitors from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, July 27 at 2 p.m. in Trinity United Church with Rev. Dr. Jim Shaffner officiating.
Donations may be made to Trinity United Church, the Palliative Care Society of the Aberdeen Hospital or a charity of choice.
