Formerly of Deer Lake drew breath for the last time on May 24th, 2009, in St. John’s, at the age of 73, after courageously coping with a period of declining health, Olive Smith, aged 73 years. Left to celebrate her life are Bill, her husband of 53 years; son George (Elizabeth Lawrence), daughter Christina (Chris Brooks), son Leslie (Margaret Fitzpatrick); sisters: Muriel White and Myrtle Bailey; nieces and nephews; as well as other relatives and friends. Ollie was a valedictorian for her 1956 graduating class at the General Hospital School of Nursing. She practiced her profession with a number of organizations including The Poison Control Centre at the Janeway and The Sick Room Equipment Loan Services with the Canadian Red Cross. Thanks are extended to the supportive visiting doctor and nurses and the staff at the Palliative Care Unit, L.A. Miller Center. Cremation has taken place. No visitation or funeral will be held although donations in Olive’s memory can be made to the School of Nursing, Memorial University of Newfoundland, 300 Prince Philip Drive, St. John’s, NL A1B 3V6.
