Douglas George Burchill of St. Martins, husband of Audrey R. (Hatfield) Burchill, passed away on Thursday, August 5, 2010 at the Saint John Regional Hospital after a lengthy illness. Born at Saint John on January 3, 1940, he was a son of the late Walter and Gladys (McDonald) Burchill.
Douglas was a member of the Canadian Armed Forces when he was younger, but spent most of his working life as a self-employed forester, except for a brief time at Saint John Shipbuilding. He was a member and Past President of Branch 63 of the Royal Canadian Legion, and enjoyed nature and all it had to offer. Doug was a very hospitable man, who enjoyed company and had a natural gift for conversation, but Doug's greatest joy in life was his family, and especially his grandchildren whom he adored.
In addition to his wife of 49 years, Doug is survived by his children, Daniel Burchill (Roxanne) of Clover Valley, Lori Burchill (Chad Duplessis) of Willow Grove, Linda Burchill of St. Martins, William "Billy" Burchill of St. Martins, and Brian Burchill (Jennifer) of Baxters Corner; his grandchildren, Heidi (Matt), Danielle, Carla (Steve), Melissa, Michael, Christopher (Michelle), Mark, Kirklyn, and Bradley; a honorary grandson, D.J.; sisters Margaret Rogers of Baxters Corner and Patsy Craft (Norman) of Corn Hill; a brother, Daniel Burchill (Carolyn) of Nackawic; a sister-in-law Jeanine Burchill of Geary; Audrey's siblings Cathy, Margie, Cindy, Gail, and Donnie; special friends Caitlyn, Nicole, and Grace; and several nieces and nephews. Doug was predeceased by his twin brother, David; and by a sister-in-law Carol Quinlan.
Although there will be no visiting, relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated on Monday, August 9, 2010 at 11:00 AM from St. William's Church, St. Martins. A private family interment will take place in the adjoining cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances to St. William's Church or Lakewood Headstart would be appreciated by the family. The funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424). www.brenansfh.com.
