Hubert C. Roach, 90, of Cheticamp died Aug. 17, 2010, surrounded by his family at Foyer Pere Fiset, where he was a resident for the past four years.
Born in Cheticamp on May 19, 1920, he was a son of the late Charlo and Peggy (LeBlanc) Roach.
Hubert was a veteran of the Second World War.
He was a taxi driver, barber, carpenter, woodsman and he worked as a land surveyor for Parks Canada until his retirement in 1984.
He served for many years on various committees. He was a member of St. Peter's Church, the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 32 for 65 years.
He loved fishing, hunting, trapping, cards and he relaxed by playing the fiddle. He was a great craftsman who made hooks for rugs, crib boards and filed handsaws for friends. After his stroke in 2004, his most treasured moments were playing crib, bingo and seek and word puzzles.
Dad was a great husband, father, grandfather, uncle and a friend to all. We will miss him dearly.
He is survived by seven children, Marielle (Wayne) LeBlanc, Sydney, Docile (Roddie) Fraser, Port Hawkesbury, Gérald (Claudette), Halifax, Patrick (Isabel), Pictou, Joseph Athanase (Kim), Dartmouth, Marie Thérèse Poirier (Tommy), Cheticamp, and Donna (Junior) Berthier, L'Ardoise; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a special sister-in-law, Marie Anne Roach, Cheticamp; many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Elizabeth, six children, one grandchild, six brothers and seven sisters.
Visitation will be held today (Thursday), 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Cheticamp Funeral Home. Funeral mass will be celebrated Friday, 10 a.m. at St. Peter's Church, Cheticamp, Fr. Allan MacMillan officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery.
