It is with great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Martin Alexander Beaton, age 82, a long time resident of Scotch Lake on Thursday, Aug. 19, 2010 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Scotch Lake, he was the son of the late Neil and Isabel (Gouthro) Beaton. Martin devoted his life to running the family farm. He enjoyed raising and tending to animals, gardening and working in the woods. Martin was employed as a bus driver with Cape Breton Victoria Regional School Board for many years, until his retirement in 1993. Throughout his life, Martin was a faithful member of St. Joseph Church in Bras d'Or and a member of the parish men's club, as well as a volunteer at many community and parish events. Martin's greatest joy was spending time with his family and entertaining the children. Martin was a very caring and loving brother and uncle and will be sadly missed.
Martin is survived by one brother, David (Monica), of Scotch Lake; his four sisters, Catherine MacDougall and Sarah Beaton, both of Sydney, Sr. Mary Beaton, C.S.M. and Sr. Elizabeth Beaton C.S.M., both of Antigonish and his brother-in-law, Michael MacNeil of Christmas Island. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Stacey, Coletta, Monique, Kyle, Lawrence, Peggy, Johnny, Cathy, Diane, Jimmy, Bobby, Donald, Francis, Mary, Michael and Georgina.
Besides his parents, Martin was predeceased by his two brothers Duncan (Betty) and Angus (Evelyn) and four sisters, Anne MacNeil, Margaret (Neil) MacNeil, Sr. Florence Beaton, C.S.M., Mary Florence Beaton and brother-in-law, Mickey MacDougall.
Visitation for Martin will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today (Saturday) and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Church, Bras d'Or with Rev. Peter McLeod officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Parish Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.
