White, Jennifer "Jenny" Jane (nee Birch) - 70, of Hall's Harbour, Kings County, Nova Scotia, passed away 29th August, 2010 at the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax, N.S. following a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born October 21st 1939 in Rhyl, Wales, she was the daughter of Raymond and Valerie Birch of London, UK. She grew up in London and Yorkshire, England, and as a small child lived through the difficult and dangerous times of World War II, along with her brother Clive. She attended the Perse School in Cambridge, UK, and after graduating with honours, studied Business Administration at the Cambridge Technical College. After graduation she worked at the UK Division of Swiss conglomerate CIBA, where she met her future husband, Ted White. She also worked as a European tour guide prior to their emigrating to Canada in 1967. They arrived in Montreal during the exhilarating time of Expo '67, and Jenny worked as a Sales Manager until they founded Canadian Hybrid Farms (CHF) together in 1973 in Stanstead, Quebec. Jenny finally found her true home when they moved, with both family and business, to Hall's Harbour, Nova Scotia in 1981. She and Ted happened upon the house on Cove Road by chance whilst house-hunting in the area, and quickly recognized it as the tranquil locale close to the ocean that they had dreamt of. There they cultivated the growth of CHF, raising lab animals for pioneering medical research from their home, for almost 20 years until Ted passed away in 2000. They employed as many as 14 people at the business's zenith in the late 80's, sending animals around the globe. Jenny also devoted herself extensively to the Annapolis Valley Regional School Board for almost 20 years, as well as time with its parent organization, the Nova Scotia School Board Association. She was always in attendance, and offered sage advice at many Annapolis Valley graduations over the years, and prized her involvement with the various local PTAs. In 2009 the N.S. Department of Education presented her with a Certificate of Outstanding Service for Long and Steadfast Advocacy of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program. Her contributions to education even included some work at the post secondary level, as a lay member of the Acadia University Senate since 2005. Through the years Jenny also found the time to contribute to numerous community organizations and events such as Hall's Harbour Days, as well as the Hall's Harbour Community Development Association, the Kings County Community Economic Development Agency, and Apple Tree Landing Children's Centre. Her philanthropic activities included being a very active blood donor, accruing over 100 donations to the Red Cross. She could always be found helping out at harbour events, pitching in wherever necessary. She enjoyed these times immensely, savouring the chance to spend time with all her close friends from the harbour and contributing to the place that was so near and dear to her heart. Jenny was actually adopted, and in 2005 was able to reunite with her birth mother and five half-siblings whom she joyfully met in 2006, and visit again in 2008. They had been searching for Jenny, and were overjoyed to finally meet her. They are now saddened that their time with her has been cut so short. Jenny loved animals, especially the many family pets - and she and Ted could often be seen in years past strolling down Cove Road, or around the harbour, walking the dogs in the evening. She enjoyed nothing more than dining and dancing with her husband and missed him greatly over the past decade. Lately her joy was showing her grandson, Nate, all the wonders of the beach and trails around the area. Her garden was a source of pride and joy and many visitors would find her conducting her work from that retreat. She was an avid traveler, enjoying numerous family trips and organizing many group trips over the years, exploring destinations as far flung as China and Russia, and many times to the Caribbean. She was also instrumental in helping Ted acquire and ship many medical supplies to Cuba. The city of Camaguey bestowed the keys to the city upon her, along with Ted, in recognition of their humanitarian efforts. She will be desperately missed by her two children, John, Toronto and Katie (along with son-in-law Darrell, and grandson Nate), Dartmouth. She is survived by her brother Clive Birch, Finmere, England, step children Martyn White, Wilmot Station, Lynne Fielding, Boston, Anne Aikman, Kingston, and her biological mother Brenda Nixon, Devon, England and new-found half-siblings Trish Evans, Mike Nixon, Simon Nixon and Guy Nixon, England. She was predeceased by her husband, Ted White, and half-sister Sue Nixon. Hall's Harbour will not be the same without her generous spirit, and she will be missed greatly by her many dear friends and neighbours. A memorial service was held the 6th of September at 2 p.m. at Orchard Hall at the Old Orchard Inn, Greenwich. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Jenny White Scholarship Fund c/o the Fundyview Community Centre, or the Canadian Cancer Society. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Kentville. On-line inquiries may be directed to www.whitefamilyfuneralhome.com
