It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of James Alvin Rockett, 77, of Lingan on Thursday, May 31, 2009, at his home where he has resided for the past 53 years.
He was the son of the late Thomas and Helen (Hicks) Rockett and was a member of the All Saints Anglican Church in New Waterford
Alvin was a hard working man who served in the Korean Conflict and was also a member of the Black Watch. He was employed with Devco and Cape Breton Development Corporation as a coal miner serving 42 years until his retirement in 1989. He had a passion for gardening and was well known for his beautiful gardens that many came to admire over the years. He also enjoyed daily drives to the Lingan Wharf and on occasion taking a trip out on the Atlantic with the boys.
Alvin is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Eileen (Fortune) Rockett. He will be sadly missed by his three daughters, Kathy Rockett, Toronto, Ont., Mary (Mark) Rockett MacKay, Calgary, Alta., June (Gordon) Smolensky, New Victoria; grandchildren, Ryan Rockett, Calgary, Brandi and Mark MacKay, Calgary, Brittney McKinnon, New Victoria; brothers, Raymond (Gwen) N.W., Harry (Adeline) Edmonton; sisters, Helen Graham, New Waterford, Shirley (Billy) Haley, Moncton, Alice, Halifax, Ruth, Marylin and Mary (Jerry) Reid all from the Annapolis Valley. Along with many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by daughter, Carolann in infancy; brothers, John, Richard, Fred, Tommy, Frank as well as sisters, Beatrice and Francis.
There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place under the direction of McLellan Brothers Funeral Home Ltd., 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford (862-7500). A funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 5, 2009 in the All Saints Anglican Church, New Waterford with the Rev. Vernon Reid officiating. Interment will be later in St. John’s Cemetery, Reserve Mines. There will be a luncheon held immediately following the funeral service at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 3236 Plummer Ave., New Waterford. All are welcome to attend.
