Tony Stengler

STENGLER - Anton (Tony) Stengler of Billimun, SK passed away on Saturday, August 28, 2010, at the age of 90 years. Tony was born December 21, 1919, to Nick and Magdalen Stengler. Tony grew up on the family homestead nine miles northwest of Mankota. Although the needs of the farm curtailed Tony's schooling opportunity, he continued his education through his love of reading and taking short community courses. He loved farming which he continued until he was in his late 80s. Tony will be remembered by his willingness to help anyone in need, be it hands-on-help or financial assistance. He was responsible for having St. Martin's Church and Pinto Dale School declared as historical sites, for erecting a cairn at each, for setting up a mini museum in the church and for upgrading the cemetery. Tony served the broader community as Reeve of Municipality #45 for 27 years, Pool delegate for District #3 for 10 years and member of the local Saskatchewan Wheat Pool Committee for 27 years. Tony was also a member of the RM Council of Glen McPherson for 30 years, member of the fire fighting board, Mankota museum board, Mankota hospital board and chairman of the Billimun Historical Society. In 1977 he received a Governor General's Silver Jubilee medal in appreciation for his service. Tony is survived by Sister Magdalen and sister-in-law Joan, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews, great grandnieces and nephews. Tony is predeceased by his parents Nick (1982) and Magdalen (nee Zerr, 1978) Stengler, siblings Annie Sperlie (1989), Marcus (1984), Emile (2009), Scholastica (1918) and Dorothy (1918), sister-in-law Annamary (2010) and brother-in-law Frank Sperlie (1993). Funeral Mass was held on Saturday, September 4, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Albert Roman Catholic Church, Mankota, SK with Father Juanito Vargas celebrant. Urn bearer was Stacey Stengler. Cross bearer was Gladys Briere. Eulogy was given by Ron Stengler. Readers were Joan B. Stengler and Ken Sperlie. Intentions were given by Joan M. Stengler. Offertory gifts were presented by Ryan Lochart and Heather Lochart. Organist was Sister Teresita Kambeitz. Honor guard was formed by the Mankota Lions Club. Interment Billimun Cemetery. Memorial tributes in memory of Tony to Billimun Community Fund were greatly appreciated. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Piche-Hawkins-Grondin Funeral Chapels, Assiniboia & Gravelbourg.
