LIONEL JOSEPH TREMBLAY
June 28, 1921 – June 6, 2009
Dear friends and family – a few words to let you know that Lionel (Dad) passed away peacefully in the early morning on June 6 at the age of 87. Lionel was born and lived in the Courval district. He attended Courval School to grade ten and took his grade eleven at Coderre High School. He then went to College Mathieu and received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Ottawa in 1940. He was accepted to attend university in Saskatoon but his father asked him to stay and help on the farm. This was the start of his successful farming career in the Courval area until his retirement in 2002. Lionel and Bernadette retired in Moose Jaw and resided at Rosewood Apartments. Over the years, Lionel (Dad) always maintained a keen interest and active participation in all community activities and organizations. He was involved, at one time or another, with the R.M. of Rodgers Council, St. Joseph’s Church, St. Charles School, Courval Community Club, the North Courval Telephone Co., the French Cultural Organization and President of Coderre/Courval and R.M. Rodgers History Board. Lionel also gave a “helping hand” at Rosewood Apartments whenever needed. Some of Lionel’s interests were antiques, furniture refinishing, his daily crossword and Soduku puzzles, playing cards and visiting with family and friends. Predeceased by his parents, Joseph H. and Dorilla Tremblay, his brother, Armand and brother-in-law, Roy Smith. Lionel is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, Bernadette (Bourgeois); five children: Leo (Peggy) Tremblay of Courval, Denise Kirkham of Regina, Paulette (Ross) McMillan of Calgary, Marc Tremblay of Moose Jaw and Jackie (Bruce) Johnstone of Coderre. He will be missed by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Remi (Alex) and Brian Tremblay; Justin (Joanne) and Dina, Jonah, Anna Tremblay; Trina (Greg) and Logan Hill; Chantelle (Blaine) Kirkham Buckle and Dustin, Stephen, Justin; Nathan (Cara) and Brynn Kirkham; Jason (Amy) and Sydney McMillan; Jody (Martin) Juliebo; Amee (Kevin) Mawson; Monique Deschambeault; Jill (Chris) and Cody, Chase McKee; Byron (Kendra) and Grady Johnstone; and Craig (Rebeca) Johnstone. Lionel is also survived by his three sisters: Laurette (Edward) of Coderre, Gisele Smith and Helen (Benny) Uchacz. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, 1064 3rd Ave. N.W., Moose Jaw. Reverend Father John Foley will preside. Interment will follow at Courval Cemetery. For those so wishing, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 61B Ross St. W., Moose Jaw, S6H 2M2.
