Sanford Frederick Hart, 93, of Margaree Valley died Sept. 24, 2010, at home. He was the son of the late Chipman and Belle (Fraser) Hart.
He was a member of the following Wilson United Church, Royal Canadian Legion, Whycocomagh, Northeast Margaree Volunteer Fire Department, Sircom Lodge No. 66, Whycocomagh, Royal Arch, Cape Breton Preceptory, Shriners Philae Temple.
Sanford was a veteran of the Second World War, he was a gunner in the 5th Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment, 88th Battery of the Royal Canadian Army. He fought in North Africa and Italy. He was wounded in Italy and no longer able to continue active duty, yet continued to serve his country in France, Belgium and Holland. It was during the liberation of Holland in 1945 that he met the love of his life and future wife, Martha.
Upon his return to Canada, he was employed by the Department of Fisheries until his retirement in 1978. Since his retirement, he enjoyed a full and active life with his family and friends, entertaining them with anecdotes of days gone by.
He is survived by son, Frederick (Celena), Margaree Valley; daughter, Bouwiena, Dartmouth; brothers, Everett, Northeast Margaree, Chester William, Truro; grandchildren, Lorie (Dan), Steven (Angie), Adam (Emmy), Matthew (Abby), Stephanie (Paul) and Bradley; great-grandchildren, Cameron, Cassandra, Maddison, Nathan, Tyler and Oliver.
He was predeceased by his wife, Martha (Dykhuis), brothers, Fulton, Nelson, Thomas, Seward, and sister, Eva May.
Visitation at Wilson United Church Hall, Shalom Room, Tuesday, Sept. 28, 6-9 p.m. where also a Masonic service will be held at 8 p.m. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 29 at Wilson United Church, Margaree Centre, with Rev. Barbara Blois officiating. Burial will be in Methodist Cemetery.
Family flowers only. Donations may be made to Inverness Palliative Care Association or Canadian Cancer Society.
