STELLARTON – George Whitman ‘Whit’ Whytewood, age 65 of Poplar St., Stellarton, passed away suddenly June 9, 2009.
Born in New Glasgow, he was a son of the late George Edward and Violet M. (Lawrence) Whitewood.
Whit was very well known in Stellarton, where he faithfully served the Police Department for 30 years; his last 20 as Chief. After his retirement Whit was part time janitor at Sharon St. John United Church where he was a member and elder. He was a much loved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. Whit was a past Scout leader at Sharon St. John, he was an avid curler, hunter, fisherman and outdoorsman, as well as a member of the south end dart league where he had stellar moments while playing his favorite game. He was a member and Past Master of Keith Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite and he was also a Philae Shriner. He was a past member of the New Glasgow City Club.
Whit is survived by his wife, the former Cheryl Fraser; son, Bruce (Stacy), Riverview, NB; daughters, Amy (Cyril), Fredericton, NB; Ann (Paul), Amersham, England; grandchildren, Jami and Daniel Whytewood, Riverview, NB; brothers: Steven (Joan) Westville; Gerald (Judy) Stellarton; Jackie (Jocelyn), Stellarton; sisters: Dorothy (Jack) Duggan, Stellarton; Kathleen (Jim) Baker, Westville; Muriel (Alexander) MacIntosh, Garden of Eden.
He was predeceased by his brother, Lawrence “Laurie” Whytewood.
Cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends form 7-9 p.m. Wednesday and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday in the H.C. MacQuarrie Funeral Home, Stellarton. Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Sharon St. John United Church, Stellarton, with Rev. John Roy officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall. Burial will be in Springville Cemetery.
