Robert Alexander "Sandy" McCallum died at his home in Truro on Sunday, October 3, 2010. A devoted family man, Sandy was husband and friend to Carol Anne (MacEachern) McCallum, father to Rob and Joanne McCallum (Ryan Thibeau) and "Papa" to Jordan McCallum.
Born in Truro, June 2, 1949, Sandy was the son of Mary Terry McCallum and the late Laurence McCallum. He is survived by his sister, LaVerne McCallum Deakin (Fred), Fredericton, NB; Gerald "Jerry" McCallum (Alice), Cranbrook, BC; Laurence "Laurie" McCallum (Helen), Red Deer, AB; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by brother Harry.
An interest in vehicles of all kinds led Sandy to study mechanics at Community College. After working for Texaco and Co-Op Fuels, Sandy was working at Stella Jones in Bible Hill at the time of his retirement.
Sandy's avid interest in hockey and baseball began in his youth, as a player, and continued with his son Rob and grandson, Jordan's participation in both sports. Involved with the Truro Senior Bearcats for several years, Sandy served on the Executive, worked in the canteen and helped look after the fields.
A great neighbour, Sandy was always helping someone whether it was repairing a vehicle, running errands, picking someone up at the airport; whatever was needed, Sandy was there. Happiest creating his woodworking projects, family and friends became the proud owners of beautifully crafted furniture, toys, and utilitarian items.
Visitation and Memorial Service will be held at the Mattatall-Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street. Visitation will be Wednesday evening, October 6th, from 7 to 9 p.m. and the service at 2 p.m. Thursday, October 7th with a reception to follow.
