UPSHAW, Gertrude Helen "Gertie"- 91, of Dartmouth, formerly of Three Mile Plains, Hants Co. The sun rose on Gertrude Helen on November 14, 1918 and the sun set on her life on September 27, 2010, at home in Dartmouth. Born in Guysborough, NS, she was a daughter of the late William and Hattie (Bowden) Pelley. Gertie was an active member of her community and showed her devotion to the Lord through her works. She was a member of Windsor Plains Ladies Auxiliary and a choir member of Windsor Plains and Windsor United Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Merry Martha's at the Windsor United Baptist Church. Gertie was on the Board of Directors of Family and Children's Services, through which she had 25 foster children and she also worked as a personal care worker at the Windsor Elms for 9 years. She is survived by children, Jim (Mavis), Judy (Cedric), Linda, Norma, Bryant, Derrick, Dawn, Cindy (Shawn) and Randy; grandchildren, John, Rozina, Sherry-Lynn, Scott, Christopher, Joseph, Ashlee, Adam, Lisa, Graham, Gneid and Melissa; great-grandchildren, Stephen, Daniel, Tessa, Emma, Noah, Mikayla and Avery; brothers, William "Bill", Stephen and Walter Pelley; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Gertie was predeceased by her husband and lifetime partner of 65 years, Norman Howard Upshaw; grandson, James; sisters, Emma, Elsie and Gladys; brothers, Norman, Howard, Jerry and Gordon. Arrangements were entrusted to Lohnes - DeMont Funeral Service Ltd., 419 Albert St., PO Box 981, Windsor, NS B0N 2T0 (902-798-8317), where the family received visitors Friday, October 1 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service was held 2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 2, in Windsor United Baptist Church, 411 King St., the Rev. Jeffrey White officiated. Burial followed in Maplewood Cemetery, Windsor with a reception following in the church hall. Family flowers only, were by request.
