Mary MacMillan, 65, of Lingan, passed away peacefully, Saturday, Oct. 16, 2010, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by her family.
Born and raised in Lingan, C.B., she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Theresa (Handrahan) MacMillan.
Mary worked in Worcester, Mass., for 42 years before retiring and returning to Lingan in June of 2010. While in Worcester, she was a devoted catholic and choir member of Christ the King Church. She was a lifetime member of the Miraculous Medal Association. Mary was also a member of the Lingan Dart League.
She was a kind, loving person who enjoyed a good book, needle pointing, skating and being with her family.
Mary is survived by her only sister, Doreen (Fred) Sponagle, New Victoria; four brothers, Walter (Mary Alice), Frankie, both in Sydney, Greg (Mary Jane), Big Pond, Bart (Tillie), Lingan; nine nieces; four nephews; two grandnieces and one grandnephew. Also left to mourn Mary's death is her aunt, Sr. Frances Gertrude of Sisters of Charity, Halifax; cousins in Cape Breton, Worcester, Chicago; and her many friends she made over the years in Worcester, Mass.
Mary was predeceased by her parents, sister-in-law, Phyllis MacMillan, and nephew, Freddie Sponagle Jr.
A sincere thanks to the doctors and nurses of the An Cala Palliative Care Unit at the CBRH and the VON for their compassion and caring nature.
Visitation will be held Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V. J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. The funeral mass, officiated by Rev. Ray Huntley is Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mt. Carmel Avenue, New Waterford. Interment to follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Lingan. All are welcome to join the family for a reception at St. Joseph's Hall, Lingan.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cancer Society or the Palliative Care Unit at the Regional Hospital, Sydney.
