Date de décès : 12 juin 2009
81, formerly of Kingston, N.S., died June 12, 2009, in Glen Haven Manor, New Glasgow, with Sylvia by her side. Mom was born May 3, 1928, in Alberton, P.E.I., to Keir and Eliza (Haywood) Campbell. She was a lifelong member of the United Church of Canada and did volunteer work for the MS Society. Mom fell in love and married Dad, Elmer Herbert Matthews, on Feb. 2, 1944, in O’Leary, P.E.I. Our Dad was in the army at that time and was sent overseas to fight for Canada in World War II. Shortly after the war he enlisted in the RCAF and Carrie became an Air Force wife. By this time they had two children, Gloria and Owen, followed by Sylvia and Derrick a few years later. Mom followed Dad around the country with four kids in tow for many years. One of their best postings was Marville, France. They took four kids all over Europe to see the sights for the four years we were there. We can’t imagine what it was like to travel with four kids in a small car with a trunk full of camping gear!! Vimy Ridge was probably the most memorable of them all. Thank you Mom and Dad, those were great times! Dad died Nov. 2, 1999, on the DVA Unit in Middleton. After a few years Mom moved to Stellarton, N.S., where Sylvia and family now live. Carrie is survived by her children: Gloria Spencer, Greenwood, N.S., Owen (Barb), Edmonton, Alberta, Sylvia (Millard) Warner, Stellarton, N.S., Derrick (Margaret), Bridgewater, N.S. Grandchildren: Peter Spencer, Paul Samuel, both of Greenwood, N.S.; Ronda (Tom) Lee, Sackville, N.S.; Mark Matthews, Fredericton, N.B.; Janice (Kirk) Stimson, Charlo, N.B.; Laura Warner, New Glasgow, N.S.; Vashti, Sheena and Ryan Matthews. Great-grandchildren: Jocelyn, Kaitlyn, Garrett and Calleigh. Carrie is survived by sisters Jean Johnston, Alberton, P.E.I.; Marion (Erskine) MacMillan, Elmsdale, P.E.I.; Bessie Horne, Rhode Island, U.S.A.; brother Billy (Stella) Campbell, Elmsdale, P.E.I.; and special cousin, Jean Kinch, Ontario. Carrie was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Elmer, brothers Ross, Fred and Robert Campbell, sister Eleanor (Sydney) Hardy. Visitation will be held 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, June 15, in the Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main St., (902) 825-3448, where funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 16, Rev. Michael Mugford officiating. Interment will be in the North Kingston Cemetery. Many thanks to Dr. Forbes and the staff of second floor, Glen Haven Manor, for their wonderful care. Even though Mom didn’t always show you how grateful she was, knowing our Mom as she always was, we know she loved you all. Donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society, SPCA, Glen Haven Manor or charity of choice. Online condolences may be made through www.middletonfuneralhome.com
