Bernie Nicholson, 78, a former resident of Union Street, New Waterford, passed away Saturday, Oct. 23, 2010, at Harbourstone Enhanced Care.
Born in New Waterford, Bernie was the son of the late Alexander and Mary Florence (MacKenzie) Nicholson.
Bernie graduated from St. Agnes High School and the Cape Breton College. He worked for the Town of New Waterford as a tax clerk in the accounting department. He retired at age 49 after a serious head injury. Despite this injury, he enjoyed life to the fullest. Bernie was outspoken, but honest, he enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, visiting friends - 'and a true friend to all he respected'. Bernie loved his grandchildren and often referred to his family as his clan, 'Scorra Bhrac'.
Bernie is survived by his daughter, Cynthia (Ernesto) Pozzebon, New Waterford; three sons, Edward (Norene), New Waterford, Kevin( Noreen), South Bar, Dale (Efsevia), New Brunswick; brother, John Hugh 'Jack' and special note to his cousin, Neil Nicholson.
Bernie is survived by his grandchildren, Robert (Nina), Kenzie, Jasmine (Michael), Carmen, Giovanni (Jennifer), Nadine (Shawn), Nelson (Melanie), Terrance (Krista), Loreen (Brian), Adam, Issac and four great-grandchildren, Reese, Ira, Lily, Owen.
Bernie was predeceased by his wife, Catherine (Carrigan) Nicholson and a brother, Edward.
Visitation will be held Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford.. The funeral mass, officiated by Rev. Doug MacDonald is Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mt. Carmel Avenue. Interment in St. Agnes Cemetery followed by a reception in St. Leonard's Hall, Convent Street.
