He is survived by his loving family: wife Vi; children Barb (Lyle) Linney, Brad (Sharon) Smith, all of Kamloops, Byron (Pat) Hill of Victoria, Brenda Hill (Juha) of Campbell River, Bob Hill (Sandy Vollo) and Barrie (Cheryl) Hill all of Kamloops; his sister Miriam (Fred) Barrett of North Vancouver, and Hal was blessed to have 14 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his first wife Vi in 1996, broth er-in-law Ken in 1963, brother George in 2005 and brother Frank in 1920's.

Hal was born on April 24, 1925 to Oliver and Cecily Smith in Bellingham, Washington. At the age of five Hal moved to Vancouver where he completed his education. After graduating in 1943, Hal joined the Army and was sent overseas for the remainder of World War II. In 1946 he started working for Canfor in Vancouver and shortly thereafter met his first wife Vi. They were married in 1951 and a year later Barb was born, followed by Brad in 1956. In 1967 Hal was transferred to Chetwynd to be the manager of the mill. In 1979 Hal again took a transfer to Kamloops to be the President of Balco (now Tolko). In 1986 he retired after 40 years with Canfor and enjoyed trips to Palm Springs golfing. In 1998, after the passing of his first wife, Hal was fortunate to meet his second wife Vi and they were married in 2001. Hal's family now grew from two to six children. In September 2010, Hal and Vi moved to Berwick on the Park. Hal enjoyed snowmobiling, golfing, fishing and hunting. He was very proud of the cabin he built at Lac La Jeune. Hal was also a devoted member of the Shriners and Royal Canadian Legion.

The family would like to offer a special thank you to Dr. Doug Hamilton and the staff at R.I.H. for the many times they cared for Hal.

A Memorial Service will take place at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 30, 2010 in the Kamloops Funeral Home Chapel, 285 Fortune Drive, with Pastor Harry Bicknell officiating.
