MacLENNAN'S MOUNTAIN - Elaine Constance (West) MacHardy, 93 of MacLennan's Mountain, Pictou County, after a brief illness, passed away peacefully with her family and friends around her at the QEII Health Sciences Center, Infirmary site, Halifax, on October 27, 2010 less then two weeks from her 94th birthday, having been born on November 8, 1916.
Born in Halifax, she was a daughter of the late Stewart Arthur (Harry) and Irene Charlotte (Harris) West.
In 1917 she was blown out of her bed in the Halifax Explosion, her bed clothes saving her. She grew up in Westville, then married and settled on MacLennan's Mountain. She was a homemaker, loved her family and her home on the mountain where she remained for over 70 years. Friends enjoyed her quick wit and sense of humour.
She was a member of St. John's Presbyterian Church and the local Dawson Auxiliary.
She is survived by her sons: Lloyd, Sutherland's River; Stewart, Upper Tantallon; Alan, Edmonton; a daughter, Vera Schwartz, Halifax; who lovingly cared for her over her last few years, eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; sisters, Dorothy Sutherland, New Glasgow; Audrey Facey, Monastery; brothers, Robert West, Peterborough; Ronnie (Elsa) West, Port Hilford. She also leaves to mourn nieces and nephews as well as special nieces, Joanne MacHardy and Evelyn Perry, and special friends, Suzanne Stanford and Anita Garside.
She was predeceased by her husband, Duncan Edward MacHardy; a sister, Anglia in infancy and a brother, Arthur Stewart West, Sylvan Lake, Alberta.
Her remains will rest in the H.W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow, for visiting from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday from St. John's Presbyterian Church, MacLennan's Mountain, Pictou County, with Rev. Charles McPherson presiding. Burial will take place in the MacLennan's Mountain Cemetery.
