Helen Babin, 87, passed away on Sunday night, June 14, 2009, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Helen lived a long and rich life, mostly in Dominion. In the early part of her life, Helen travelled throughout Nova Scotia with her husband, Joseph Leonard Babin, who was a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. She resettled in Dominion where she and Joe brought up their two daughters, Suzanne and Irene.
After the early death of her husband Helen took care of her mother Sadie MacVarish for many years. It was during that period Helen began her long voluntary career in Dominion. Helen chaired the social services committee and was instrumental in raising money for youth sports, and was especially proud of helping to establish another baseball field for the town. In 2002 she received a lifetime achievement award, “presented to an outstanding citizen who has demonstrated through involvement in sports and community activities her dedication in helping the youth of the Town of Dominionâ€.
For the past 30 years until her death Helen remained an avid bowler and bowled weekly with two teams. She was an active member of the CWL.
Helen was deeply loved by her friends and by her family. Her daughters Irene and Suzanne are especially saddened and will deeply miss their beloved mother. Helen leaves behind four grandchildren, Shawn Higgins, Kelly Ann Higgins, Michael Higgins and Holly Deveaux Babin, as well as five great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Wednesday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Immaculate Conception Church, Bridgeport with Fr. Gerald Campbell officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.
