ROUSE - John Fred Rouse, known to all as "Fred", was born in Shaunavon, June 11, 1926, a twin to his younger brother Bill. Fred went to Cedar View School. He was industrious even as a youngster and ran a water service using his Shetland pony and a cart. Fred loved sports and became a pitcher for Cedar View School ball and later for the Simmie Men's Team, playing sports days and Sunday games at Lake Pelletier. Fred loved life and was an avid hunter in early years, hunting with his brothers, Claude, James, Bill and friends. He also demonstrated his love of sports by skating and playing hockey on a frozen creek. In 1946, he married his sweetheart Therese Dextraze. They started their new life with a Model-A, a second hand chesterfield, a borrowed table, four new chairs, one cow, one pig and a dog. They were blessed with four children (the twins) Sandra and Judy, Cheryl and Terry. All Girls! Poor Fred - one bathroom, five women and more high heels and make-up than a normal man could cope with! Fred continued to play sports well into his fifties. He was very involved in the lives of his children and often acted as mentor and coach. He ensured that his children were active participants in such sports as track and field, curling and softball. Fred was a fan of all sports and pursued this passion throughout his life watching many of them on TV. As serious as he was about sports, Fred always had time to tell a good joke and perhaps to hear a few as well. Fred was a good listener and showed respect for the views of others. He actually took the time to listen and to understand their concerns. He was an extraverted individual who was always genuine and sincere. He treated everyone with respect. Fred farmed for his entire life, beginning with work on the family farm at a very young age. He started working outside the family farm at age 16. At the age of 19, Fred and Therese settled on the former Jim Austin farm where they still resided. He witnessed the evolution of farming as an industry - from the horse, plow and 6 foot one-ways to the eventual employment of modern equipment, fertilizers, chemicals and technology. In the 1930's, Fred and his brothers worked their horse teams 24 hours a day to complete the farming operations. Animals enriched Fred's life. They touched his heart and his soul each and every day. He respected them for their wisdom. He spent his life ensuring that the animals under his care were safe, secure and well fed. He derived a sense of strength and peace of mind from his interaction with his animals. Fred never lost touch with the importance of his family. Whatever interests they held became important matters of interest to Fred. He always had good advice for family members on major issues. Fred was a man of resolve, who was very secure in his own being. He distinguished the values of life in terms of deeds rather that money. Fred and Therese raised their children to become strong responsible, hard-working adults who personify those values. Fred and Therese celebrated 60 years of marriage in 2006. Love of people, a sense of humor, an ability to call every person he met by their name, a very real interest for his fellow man, Fred loved life in all of its forms. Above all, Fred was a husband, a father, a brother, a grandfather, a great grandfather and a good friend. He will be solely missed and fondly remembered. His values and spirit will live on through the lives of his children and grandchildren.
