It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our wonderful mother and grandmother, Veronica McPherson, on Thursday, Nov. 4, 2010 at her home surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Ronald Hugh and Mary Margaret (McMullin) O’Handley and was a member of St. Anne’s parish, Glace Bay.
In her early years, mom worked as a housekeeper for local families, a waitress at the Union Café restaurant and Mackie’s Nursing Home, all in Glace Bay and in her later years at the G.I. Plant in Sydney.
Mom was a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother. She always had a hug and a smile for everyone. Throughout her life she enjoyed family outings, long drives with her husband, George, watching soap operas on TV and until her illness, she enjoyed playing bingo. She was a wonderful cook and baker, well known for her homemade bread and pies, which she shared with family and friends. She always had something nice to go with tea when you visited.
Mom will be sadly missed by her daughters, Marie McPherson, Sachs Harbour, NWT, Shirley (Gary) Hiscock, Glace Bay; sons, Bobby, Dartmouth, Reggie (Carolynn), Ont., Larry (Lynn), Howie Centre; sister, Marion, Ont., 12 grandchildren including Crissy, who was a loving caregiver to Veronica; 15 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and friends.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her best friend and the love of her life for 63 years, husband, George McPherson (2009); sisters, Gertrude, Christie, Addie, Margaret, Mainnie; brothers, Johnny and Rannie.
In honouring Veronica’s wishes, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral mass will be held 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2010 at St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay, with Fr. Leo Boone officiating. A reception will follow in the church foyer, with a private family interment at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Veronica’s memory may be made to a charity of choice.
