It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Eileen Marie (Smith) MacNeil of Victoria Mines, N.S., on Thursday, June 18, 2009, after a short illness.
Born in Amherst, N.S., she was the daughter of Osborne E. and Daphne A. (Blanche) Smith.
She resided in Victoria Mines, N.S., since 1949 and spent the last 3 1/2 years of her life residing at Bradford Hall, Parkland Estates in Halifax, N.S.
She is survived by her daughters, Maureen (James) Newman, Truro, N.S., and their children Heidi (Mark) MacDonald, Fredericton, N.B., and Paul, at home, Janice (Charles) Magee, Nanaimo, B.C., and their children Nadine (Michael) Salter, Calgary, Alta., and their infant son Kellan and Mark, Calgary, Alta., Lorraine (Robert) McLean, Ajax, Ont., and their children Sarah and Katie, at home; sons, Philip (Jeanne-Mance), Sackville, N.B., Scott (Margaret), Lower Sackville, N.S., and their daughter Keri, at home, and David (Beverly), Halifax, N.S.; sister, Francis Stack, Amherst, N.S.; brothers, Walter, Antigonish, N.S., and Lloyd, St. John’s, N.L.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, John, daughter, Jonna, infant daughter, Nadine, brother, Gerald, and infant brother, John.
She will be resting at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Sydney, N.S., with visitation from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday, June 21. Funeral mass to be held at St. Joseph’s Church, New Victoria, N.S., Monday, June 22 at 10 a.m. Burial to take place at St. Alphonsis Parish Cemetery, Victoria Mines, N.S., immediately following the funeral service. A reception to celebrate her life will be held at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Sydney, N.S., immediately following the cemetery service.
In lieu of flowers and in loving memory of her husband John and her daughter Jonna, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

The MacNeil family would like to thank Mum’s extraordinary neighbours in Victoria Mines for all the kindness provided to her over the years; the staff of Bradford Hall at Parkland Estates in Halifax, N.S., for all the care provided to Mum during her time there; and last but not least, the doctors and nurses of the QE II Halifax Infirmary, Units 8.2 and 8.3 for the care and compassion shown to Mum during her short illness.
