It is with deepest sorrow but with the comfort of wonderful memories that we announce the death of Dorothy English at Hants Community Hospital, Windsor, Nova Scotia, on November 8, 2010.
Mom was predeceased by her husband and best friend, Rollie, in 1995; her brother, Donald and sisters, Marjorie and Helen.
Born in Pictou and a resident for 91 of her 92 years, to John and Margaret (Logan) MacMillan, she is survived by daughters, Joan (Bill McNeil) Windsor; Beryl (Ken MacDonald) Calgary; eight grandchildren: Karen (Ross) Lord; Jane (Lou) Fraser; Allan (Adrianne) McNeil, Windsor; Beth (Geoff) Hawboldt, Calgary; Nancy (Dana) Farina, Dartmouth; Mark MacDonald (Jennifer D'Eath); Anne MacDonald (Ryan Scoville) and Darcy MacDonald, all of Calgary; and her sister-in-law, Bernice English, Pictou. Mom is also survived by 12 treasured great-grandchildren and many special nieces and nephews.
Mom was a very special woman to all of us. She was kind, deeply caring and considerate, devoted to her family and fiercely proud of all their achievements. She was a hard worker but always took time to sit on the veranda with her little dog, Missy; marvel at the view of the water and appreciate the important things in life. She was our mentor, our voice of reason and always our support. Mom enjoyed many interests over the years that included bowling, knitting, puzzles, baking and volunteering. Her church and community were extremely important to her. Her passion was her garden and her favourite spot was in the raspberry patch.
Although she had major changes in her life the past couple of years she embraced them with her positive attitude. She so enjoyed making new and special friendships at the Pictou Shiretown and most recently at the Gladys Manning Residence in Windsor. She was thrilled with recent visits from her Pictou friends. She had a special place in her heart for Debbie MacLean. We were all so proud of her enthusiasm to continue to grow and learn new things, to live life fulfilled, to make us all feel loved in our own special way. We will miss our "Grammie Dor" every day.
Our sincere thanks to the staff at Hants Community Hospital for their compassionate care and in particular to her physician and special friend, Dr. Cathryn Smith. Mom would also want to thank Dr. Randy Burrill, Pictou, for the care he gave her for many years.
Donations in Mom's memory may be made to First Presbyterian Church, Pictou, or to a charity of one's choice.
Funeral service will be held in First Presbyterian Church, Pictou, on Thursday, November 11, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. Internment at Haliburton Cemetery. Fellowship to follow at the church hall.
