TRENTON – Florence Abigal "Flossie" Dort, (83) of Trenton, NS, passed away on November 14, 2010 in Halifax, with loving family by her side.
She was born in Halfway Cove, Guysborough County, a daughter of the late Howard and Sarah (Bond) Dort.
She was raised there, along with sisters: Edith, Emma, Nettie, Beulah, Estella and Ruby, and adoptive brother and sister Lawrence and Mae, and aunt Hazel (Bond). In the 1960's, she moved to Pictou County, where she resided until her death. She took ownership of the family homestead in Halfway Cove, and returned there every summer for many years. The door was always open and she loved to have her family spend time with her there. It was through Florence that our family had the opportunity to stay connected to the home where we all grew up. She loved to laugh, enjoyed a good joke, spending time in her flower gardens and a game of bingo. But she and her sisters would agree, "There's nothing like a good game of cards!". She will be sadly missed by only two remaining sisters, Estella (Walter) Ehler of Trenton, formerly from Canso; and Ruby (John) Dort of Stellarton; many nieces and nephews. Although Florence never had any children of her own, she was like a mother to many. She was especially close to her niece Ellen Dort and great-niece Dara (Shawn) Dort, of Halifax. Through her short, but courageous battle with cancer, Dara and Shawn took Florence into their home and lovingly cared for her until her death. She was known as "Nanny Two" to their two children, Gavin (age 5) and her namesake, Abby (age 1). She was also very close to her nephew Wayne Dort, his wife Tanya and their three children Sarah, Jessica and Dalton, all of Burlington, Ontario.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by sisters: Edith (Stanley) Williams of Havre Boucher; Emma (Ralph) Armsworthy of Canso; Nettie (John) Eaton of New Glasgow; Beulah (David) Vincent of Trenton; adoptive brother and sister: Lawrence (Helen) of Ontario and Mae (John) Carmichael of Hillside; several nieces and nephews.
Florence will be resting at the R.H. Porter Funeral Home in Trenton on Wednesday, November 17, from 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held at St. James the Martyr Anglican Church in Halfway Cove on Thursday, November 18 at 3 p.m. with Rev. Darroch Fagan officiating. There will be a short viewing at the church prior to the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Family flowers only. Donations may be made in memory of Florence to the Canadian Cancer Society.
A special thank you goes out to Dr. S. Barclay; her Palliative Care Nurse Glenna Thornhill; Continuing Care Nurse Marie Clare; Palliative Care O.T. Kim Henson; and family friend Kim Richardson. But most of all, the entire family wishes to thank Dara, her great-niece, Aunt Flossie loved you dearly. She ended her long and happy life in your excellent loving care. We are all so proud of you, for your strength, support and dedication to Florence.
