It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Anne Elizabeth ‘Bette’ Ogley. Bette, a former resident of 11th Street, Glace Bay, and more recently Seaview Manor, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2010, at the Glace Bay Hospital.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late William and Beatrice (Boone) Martin and was a member of St. John’s Church, Glace Bay.
Bette, better known as ‘Nanny’ was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother who will be truly missed.
She enjoyed playing bingo, crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, video games, especially Q-Bert and pin ball and in earlier years camping and swimming. She also looked forward to her games of tarabish with her family and playing solitaire. She enjoyed baking for her family, her speciality was baking bread. She had a great sense of humour and loved being surrounded by her family.
Nanny will be forever missed by her daughters, Beatrice, Hilda (Bruce) Pittman, Martha, Karen, Bernadette (Sam) Jessome, all of Glace Bay; sons, Billy, Ontario, Joey (Joanne), Glace Bay, Pat (Joanne), Halifax, Lloyd (Karen), Glace Bay, Barry (Dale), Alberta, Paul (Shelly), Ontario, Bernie, Blaine (Michelle), both of Glace Bay; stepdaughters, Kay (Morris) Smith, Ontario, Norma (Danny) MacNeil Antigonish; stepsons, Butch (Gladys), Melvin, both of Ontario, Max (Pat), River Ryan; 62 grandchildren; 78 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Walter Ogley (1973), sons Raynard, Blair, stepdaughter, Lena, stepsons, Walter ‘Buster’, Tom, Charles ‘Bear,’ Frank, and sister, Rita Tarrmorvorra.
In honouring Nanny’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Thursday, Nov. 18 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral mass will be celebrated 11 a.m., Friday at St. John’s Church, Glace Bay, with Fr. Leo Boone officiating. Interment will be held in the parish cemetery.
At this time, we, Bette’s family, would like to sincerely thank the staff of Seaview Manor for the care and compassion shown to our Mom during her years as a resident and also to student volunteers Paige MacLean and Patrick Simms who assisted the staff at meal times.
