PITTMAN, Eric George– Passed away peacefully November 17, 2010 with love and care at Ivany Place, Northwood Nursing Home, Bedford, NS in his 99th year. Eric G. Pittman is formerly of St. John’s Newfoundland. He is predeceased by son David and brother Fred RCAF, sisters Ruth and Enid. Leaving to mourn his wife Hazel V. Cave after a happy marriage of 74 years. Eric is also survived by devoted and cherished daughter Margo Stewart (Harvey), Bedford; granddaughter Gillian, Halifax, grandson Christopher (Jill), Airdrie, Alberta, and cherished great-grandchildren: Michael and Ashleigh. As well, sister-in-law Mrs. Clare Rowe of St. John’s, Nfld, and thoughtful nieces and nephews, cousins and treasured friends will also miss Eric’s great personality and good sense of humour.
Eric was Newfoundland’s longest living Charter Member of Kiwanis, organized in 1950, was the Club’s first Secretary and set a precedent for efficient reporting. Eric served as President in 1954 and Lt. Governor in 1969. In 1995, Eric was made a Life Member of Kiwanis International. The Music Festival was another delight in Eric’s career, as one of its founders in 1951. He was a member of George St. United Church holding many of its official offices, his greatest joy. He was also Treasurer of the United Church Orphanage Board for 15 years. In business life, Eric worked at the well-known Newfoundland Margarine Co., which was later acquired by Lever Brother’s Ltd. After some years at the Toronto office, Eric returned as Secretary Treasurer, soon after becoming its Director and later was appointed President. Since 1997 Eric and Hazel made their home at Melville Heights in Halifax, close to Margo and family. They were completely happy with the dedicated management and staff plus its beautiful surroundings. However, due to Eric’s sudden illness, Hazel and Eric moved to the lovely Northwood Nursing Home (Ivany Place, Bedford). No flowers or visitation at the family’s request. A family interment will be held following cremation. Please visit www.jasnowfuneralhome.com
