With sadness in our hearts we announce the death of Peter Nicol in the Royal Inland Hospital after a short illness.

Peter is survived by Iris, his wife of fifty five years, his son Matt, daughter-in-law Sam and granddaughters Cara and Eilidh.

My dad was my hero. When I was small he was a red-headed giant, with callused hands and a ready smile. He whistled his way through my life, building boats, and rebuilding old and battered cars: working all night then coming home to take us away on vacation: carrying me on his shoulders while playing soccer with my cousins: teaching me to swim, although he could not swim a stroke himself. There was nothing he could not make or build from a tiny intricate metal component to a house or a sailing boat. After his stroke in 1998, it left him almost blind and with limited mobility, he took up wood carving and made beautiful wooden carvings of birds and horses. All the while, he taught me. He taught me patience and persistence. He taught me that no problem is too big to solve if you break it down in to small parts and tackle it a bit at a time. He taught me to judge a persons value by their deeds not by their words, and he taught me that love of friends and family is the most important treasure of all.

The world was richer for his presence in it, and is poorer with his loss.
