It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Richard Burton, age 63, of Glace Bay and formerly of Dominion. Richard passed away Monday, Nov. 29, 2010 at his residence.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Leo and Mary Anne (Burns) Burton.
Richard was a member of Branch #3 Legion and Royal Canadian Navy. He was a member of the Dominion Fire Department retiring after 18 years of service. He enjoyed playing Santa to so many children over his 18 years at the fire department. He was employed with Devco retiring from Phalen Colliery after 30 years of service.
Richard was a member of the Men of the Deeps. He was an avid Chicago Black Hawk fan. He was well known in the community and will be missed by family and many friends.
Richard will be sadly missed by his loving daughter, Suzanne 'Suzie' (Mark Munroe), Dominion, Stephen (Lisa), Bridgewater; brother, Patrick, Glace Bay; sisters, Leone (George) Briand, Windsor, Ont., Irene Moore, Glace Bay, Claire (Harvey) MacPhee, Glace Bay; three cherished grandchildren, Christopher, Sarah and Emily. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Veronica Anne 'Bonnie' Nearing; sisters, Rose McIntyre and Carol Ann Mischiek.
Visitation for Richard Burton will be held Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. on Friday at St. Eugene's Church, Dominion with Fr. Daniel Boudreau officiating. Cremation will follow. A reception will be held in the church hall, all are welcome.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Richard's memory may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
