It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Derek O'Brien, 38, of Glace Bay and formerly of Reserve Mines. Derek passed away Sunday, Nov. 28, 2010, at the Glace Bay Hospital.
Born in Glace Bay, Derek was the son of the late Kevin and Goretti 'Greta' (MacDonald) O'Brien.
Derek spent a lot of time writing and reading poetry as well as sketching. He was an avid collector of all types of music.
Derek is survived by a brother, Shawn O'Brien.
Besides his parents, Derek was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Henry and Frances MacDonald and paternal grandparents, Patrick 'Patty' and Mary O'Brien.
In honoring Derek's wishes, cremation has taken place. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 4 in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home Chapel, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Fr. Daniel Boudeau will be officiating. Interment will be in St. James Cemetery, Gardiner Mines.
