Lloyd C. ‘Kip’ Johnston, 85, of Sydney, passed away Tuesday, June 23, 2009, in An Cala Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in North Sydney, he was the son of Clifford and Marion (Minnie) Johnston.
At 18, he joined the RCAF, serving as a pilot overseas with 422 Squadron during the Second World War.
After graduating from Dalhousie with his MSc in 1950, he took employment with Dosco here in Sydney, where he worked for 18 years. For the next nine years he was employed by Union Carbide Corp in the U.S.A. He then returned to Cape Breton where he worked at Sydney Steel as vice-president of operations, the National Research Council and the Atlantic Coal Institute.
He was truly an amazing man and was loved and respected by everyone who knew him. Next to his wife and family, children were his greatest joy. Countless lives have been enriched by his zeal for life and his love of learning. He instilled in others a desire to be the very best that they could be.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Ninnette (nee Williams), Florence; his son, Earl, (Ann), Sydney; daughters, Judy (Stephen), Mississauga, and Linda (Bill), Halifax; four grandchildren, Laura, Meghan, Doug and Devon Paige; brother, Jim (Joyce), Sherbrooke; sister, Ethel (Steve), Salmon Arm, B.C.; sister-in-law, Ann, Hamilton; numerous nieces and nephews and a wide circle of friends.
He was predeceased by sister, Marion and her husband, Ronnie, brothers, Bill and his wife, Mary, Graham and Ross.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m., Thursday, July 2 at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney, with Pastor Sheldon Chant officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CBRH Palliative Care or any children’s charity.
We would like to share his personal philosophy by which he lived and which he encouraged others to embrace — “Whatever you do, do it with a light heart.â€
