Marjorie Ethel Hoeg
With deep sadness, the family of Marjorie Hoeg, age 87, of South Athol, NS announce her sudden passing at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre on Wednesday, June 17, 2009.
Born in Springhill, she was a daughter of the late Warren and Ethel (Rector) Mason.
Marjorie came to South Athol as a schoolteacher where she met her future husband Roy. Together, they worked hard to provide for their family and ensure the success of their many enterprises. Her leisure time included many hours spent on the beautiful needlework that graces the walls of her home, her church or those that have been shared with family and friends. Marjorie was an accomplished woman but she considered her family her greatest achievement.
Marjorie worked in the Athol United Church as Sunday School teacher and Organist for many years until that congregation amalgamated with Southampton United. She was a Charter Member of the Pythian Sisters, Riverside Temple # 38 which was organized in 1950, holding many offices throughout the years, including both Treasurer and Pianist at the time of her passing. She had held the office of Past Chief of Riverside Temple #38 as well as District Deputy Grand Chief of the Maritime District Pythian Sisters.
Marjorie had been a member of the Athol UCW, holding various offices, especially that of Treasurer for many years until it was disbanded in 2004. She had been a member of the Athol Red Cross since 1942 when “Miss Mason” was added to their roll.
Marjorie was a strong and steady partner in the business with Roy, being most heavily involved in the clerical end. She had many friends in the wild blueberry and lumbering industries and was always glad to catch up on news at their respective meetings.
She loved to travel and accompanied by her daughter, Ruth, had recently returned from a trip to Arizona visiting Harold.
Marjorie will be sadly missed by 3 daughters, Judith (Frank) Farrell, Ottawa, Dorothy (Tom) Lambourne, Calgary and Ruth Hoeg, South Athol; 4 sons, James (Bernadette), and Gerald (Dayle), both of South Athol, Kenneth (Barb), Fenwick and Harold of Scottsdale, AZ; 12 grandchildren, Marika, Alice, Andrew, Teresa, Sonya, Jason, Lisa, Matthew, Adrianna, Rorey, Bethany and Bradley; 16 great grandchildren and sister-in-law, Florence Wilson, Winnipeg. She was predeceased by her husband, Roy (2006), a son, Lawrence (1977), a sister, Doris and a brother Vernon.
Marjorie's remains have been entrusted into the care of the Furlong-Jones Funeral Home, Amherst (667-8777) with visitation on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. The remains will be transferred to the Southampton United Church for funeral service Friday, June 19, 2009 at 2 pm. Reception to follow in the Southampton Community Centre. Private family burial in the Southampton Cemetery. Donations to the Palliative Care, Southampton United Church or a charity of the donor's choice gratefully appreciated.
