URSULA CHARLOTTE WENDT (nee KOMM) - On November 30, 2010 at Hants Community Hospital, our beloved Uhr-Oma, Oma, mother and friend died peacefully with family by her side after a very short illness. Ursula was born in Memel (Klaipeda), East Prussia on April 12, 1917, during the turmoil of the First World War. She grew up on the Baltic coast in the resort community of Cranz where she developed a passion for archaeology, folk history, athletics and the creative arts. Although she obtained a degree in physical education and began a career as a teacher, her ambition was to study archaeology. Both were thwarted at the outbreak of the Second World War when she was drafted into the Post Office. At the height of the war, she met and married her life-long love, Paul Wendt, a Civil Engineer and an officer in the Pioneer Corps of the German army. As the war neared its end, she led twelve people (including her infant son) to safety in the west in advance of the invading Russian armies. Eventually, in 1951, she and her husband and children found refuge in Canada. During her long and productive life in rural Nova Scotia (first in Ardoise and then in Ellershouse) she expressed deep gratitude for the welcome she and her family received here. In turn, she was admired and loved for her generosity, her strength of character, her work ethic, her creativity and her hospitality. The visitors' book in her library contains the signatures and expressions of respect of hundreds of visitors from all over the globe. Her historic home became the centre of lively intellectual discussion and a show-case for her weaving, her poetry, her needle-point and her many other crafts. She and Paul delighted in their extensive gardens and they were life-long members of the Rhododendron Society. Her six children, their partners, her grandchildren, her great-grandchildren and her many friends and admirers whose lives have been enriched by her coming and impoverished by her passing, will long mourn. A funeral service was held on December 4 at 2:00 P.M. at St. Louisa Church in Ellershouse. Reception followed at the Ellershouse Hall. Private Internment. The family wishes to thank all those who cared for her in recent years particularly her community care workers and the dedicated staff at Hants Community Hospital. Ursula loved flowers but, in lieu, donations may be made to any worthwhile charity.
