It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved father and grandfather, James Henry Simm, on Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2010, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
A lifelong resident of Florence, James was the son of Claire (Hale) and Ernest Jubilee Simm. He attended Wilson United Church and was a member of the Royal Oak Lodge No. 85 and the Bras d'Or Seniors & Pensioners Club.
James was a lobster fisherman, a fireman on the lake boats, and he owned & operated a barbershop and a convenience store in Florence for many years. He was a loving, gentle, family man who loved the outdoors. He enjoyed hiking and fishing, and especially loved spending time at his summer cabin in Aberdeen with his children and grandchildren. In recent years, James was adored by his great-grandchildren and always had a treat waiting for them when they went to visit.
James was an independent thinker and a problem-solver who adhered to his own set of beliefs and principals. He loved to debate many topics, ever respectful to the opinions of others. He enjoyed watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy every evening.
He loved to dance and was a faithful Toronto Maple Leafs fan.
Besides his parents, James was predeceased by his wife, Gale Simm, his companion, Helene MacLellan, his daughter-in-law, Dale Simm, and his brothers Darwin Simm and Ernest Simm.
James is survived by his four loving sons, Brian (Nora), Sault Ste. Marie, Rick, Florence, Jamie (Cindy), Stouffville, and Laurie, Aberdeen. He leaves behind his loving grandchildren, Stacey, Krista, Rick Jr., Karen, Jody, Keri, Erin, Meaghan, David, and Shane, and their spouses. 'Grampy' will be sadly missed by his great-grandchildren, Austen, Madelyn, Kelly, Ryan, Ailish, Dalen, Russy, Danielle, Carter, Olivia, Emma, Lindsie, Caroline, and Shane Jr. James is also survived by his sister, Rosina Gallop, Florida, and by Helene's large and loving family, the Walkers and MacLellans.
In accordance with James' wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. A service to honor James' life will be held at Wilson United Church in Florence on Saturday, Dec. 11, 2010 at 2 p.m., with Norma Mills, DLM officiating. Burial at Brookside Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in James' memory to the Canadian Hemophilia Society, Nova Scotia Chapter, 94 Dow Rd., New Minas, NS B4N 3R5
