In the early morning of Dec. 10, 2010, an earthly angel was called to heaven.
It is with great sadness that the family of Joan (MacDonald) Sharpe announces her death at the Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro.
Born in Sydney, she was a daughter of the late Hughie Dan and Agnes Elizabeth (Lewis) MacDonald.
Joan was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Mom and her sisters, Catherine and Camella, lost their mother to cancer, as little girls. Each sister was given a wonderful home in their extended family of relatives, who adored them. Mom was brought up in Reserve, C.B., by her maternal uncle, the late Adam Lewis and his wife the late Adelaide (Lewis) Lewis. Not only was she loved by her special parents, but also her special brother and sister, the late Worrell (Emma) Lewis and the late Avice (Donald) Matheson.
Joan worked at F.W. Woolworths for 23 years. She was involved in many volunteer organizations. She was a member of the Colchester Regional Hospital Auxiliary; volunteered in the Colchester Regional Hospital Coffee Shop; was a member of Cedar Stone Enhanced Care Facility Family Council and loved volunteering at Cedar Stone Enhanced Care Facility. She was a member of St. John's Princess Mary Guild and Hope Chest. Joan played bridge with the same group of wonderful 'Bridge Club Ladies' for 40 years. She was beloved by all who had the honour and privilege of knowing her. Joan's hospitality and noble Christian charity knew no bounds. She was not only an adored mother to all her children and grandchildren but was loved by countless others who, in her life time she had befriended. Joan's family was her pride and joy of her life.
She is survived by her seven children, Joanne Ritcey (Greg Wilson), Truro, Sherene Sharpe, Bridgewater, Pamela Sharpe, Halifax, Murray 'Buddy' Sharpe, Edmonton, Melinda (Kirk) Miller, Truro, Adam (Jackie Penner), Edmonton, and Kirby Sharpe, Edmonton. Her grandchildren, Lisa (Nate Haddon), Jennifer, Ryan Ritcey, Patrick Hickey, Benjamin Sharpe, Trish (McNutt) Leblanc, Kennedy Miller and Steven Penner.
Joan is also survived by her brother, Adam (Lois) Lewis, Sydney, and sister, Joyce (Don) Brown, Kanata, Ont., and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mom was predeceased by her loving husband of 55 years, Murray 'Buddy' Sharpe, sisters, Catherine MacNeil, Camella Hood, and son-in-law, Kirk Ritcey.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Neil Bower, the ICU medical/nursing staff and the medical/nursing staff of 3 North for their care, concern and kindness for our mother. Special thanks to Anne White and Rev. Lori Ramsey for all of their continuous love and support.
Visitation will be held Monday, Dec. 13 from 6-9 p.m. at Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro. Funeral service Tuesday, Dec. 14 at 2 p.m. at St. John's Anglican Church, 23 Church St., Truro. Interment in the Robie Street Cemetery.
