It is with broken hearts, we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, George 'Doad' Burte , following a brief but courageous battle with cancer on Tuesday evening, Dec. 14, 2010, at his residence. At the time of his death, George was surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Glace Bay, June 21, 1925, George was the son of the late Thomas and Susan (Budge) Burte.
George was a member of St. Mary's Anglican Church, Glace Bay. He was a veteran of the Second World War and the Korean Conflict. George was a retired coal miner, having worked in No. 26 Colliery from 1957 to 1984. He was a hard worker who loved to shovel snow; he also enjoyed working around the yard and going to the gym. But mostly, George will be remembered as a family man.
He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Jean (King) Burte; daughters, Helen (Steven) Theal, Amherst, Nancy (Dougie) Demeyere, Dominion, Susan (Robert) MacAulay, Sydney; and one son, Eldon (Florence), Oromocto. Also surviving are nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Fan Bates, Bette Bates, Vina Murphy (Terrence); special friend, Lief Morrison and his family; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Besides his parents, George was predeceased by two sons in infancy, precious granddaughter, Michaela Burte, four brothers and one sister.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral service, officiated by Rev. Vernon Reid is Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel followed by interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
As an expression of sympathy for George, memorial donations in his memory may be made to the IWK Hospital or the Spina Bifida Association.
